The difference between the Tingirana hand rail and others you may have seen, is the glass is curved, it has no bottom rail and is set straight into the concrete floor. Normally many flat small pieces of glass are joined together to give an illusion of curved glass, and a bottom rail is usually required.

Previous to our solution, a symmetrical oval or tubular extrusion would have been used, then after the rolling process, straight slots would be routed into the aluminium to receive the flat glass. Alternatively straight pieces of channel would be riveted on to the curved tube to hold the glass in a traditional manor. Neither of these solutions could do the job and give a continuous curved glass balustrade.

To develop the solution, the aluminium extrusion was treated like it was a fluid, in a similar way to techniques used in aluminium spinning. With careful consideration, rolling dies to support and keep the metal precisely where we wanted it were designed. With the addition of the ability to steer the extrusion through the rolling machine we were able to achieve total accuracy and a product which is functional and aesthetic.

We designed the solution, made the dies and did the job, which fitted perfectly in place the first time. Nybro developed a solution that now many curving and fabrication companies are using on a regular basis.
